On September 1, AL.com published an opinion-editorial authored by Porter White & Company’s Chairman, Jim White. In the piece, Jim discusses the benefits of the service and shares insights gleaned from a conversation with a business executive who visited Birmingham recently.
Although several articles have been published about Uber throughout the past year, very few authors have examined the economic implications of the service. In his op-ed, Jim encourages readers to think about the real economic value of the service, as well as its attractiveness to business owners.
At the end of the piece, Jim prompts readers to explore the most recent Birmingham Area Economic Report, which PW&Co published last month. Although he does not infer that the employment figures included in the report are a reflection of Uber’s absence, he does state that, “the Birmingham area is badly in need of more good jobs.”
PW&Co does not work for Uber or endorse the service, but our team does see value in prompting conversations about the “sharing economy.” As Birmingham policymakers approach the next city council meeting at which Uber will be considered, we hope that some of the questions that Jim has posed will spark thoughtful deliberation.
